School Counseling Statement of Philosophy

As the school counselor at Yadkin Valley Regional Career Academy I believe:

  • Education is a responsibility shared by staff, students, parents/guardians and community and is based on an atmosphere of mutual respect
  • All students have intrinsic value
  • Each student has the potential for learning and for meeting high academic standards
  • Each student has a unique set of individual needs that must be considered as he/she develops at his/her own rate
  • My primary role is to be the advocate for every student
  • It is necessary to celebrate and draw upon the diversity among our students
  • All students should and will have access to a education specialist level school counselor

And that the Yadkin Valley Regional Career Academy comprehensive counseling program should:

  • Be based on the goals and developmental student competencies outlined by the American School Counselor’s Association, the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction, and the Davidson County School District
  • Have a delivery system that includes school counseling curriculum, individual planning, responsive services and system support
  • Be both comprehensive and developmental in nature, proactive in design and responsive to societal trends
  • Use data to drive program development and evaluation
  • Draw upon the knowledge of and collaborate with family, school, and community stakeholders
  • Be willing to seek continuous improvement through self-assessment
  • Utilize a team approach for planning and management purposes
  • Embrace technology to enhance program delivery

    And as the school counselor at Yadkin Valley Regional Career Academy:

  • Abide by the professional school counseling ethics as advocated by the American School Counseling Association
  • Participate in professional growth and development activities essential to maintaining a quality counseling program and to remain abreast of best practices
